But perhaps even more importantly than these numbers, this car is about 15% more efficient than last year's Maxima. And that means it gains 4 miles per gallon on the highway for a total of 30. Also you can expect about 22 mpg around town. Combined – about 25 – another pretty impressive figures for such a large sporty car. Helping deliver extraordinary efficiency is Nissan's latest Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission. Usually I'm not a fan of these cog-less ratio-swappers, but this one is quite pleasant and actually mimics gear changes during heavy throttle applications which eliminates a lot of the droning normally associated with CVTs. Anyway, as quick as this car is, I don't want my ego to write checks my body can't cash, so I'm gonna back it of for half a notch too here. Driving the Maxima is quite impressive.

This thing feels very wide, which can make it a challenge to navigate some of the narrow-back country roads here in Tennessee. Also it's difficult to see with the tall foot exactly where the corners of the vehicle are. But still it handles extremely well, the feel really crisp and precise.

Very impressive steering in this big sedan here. Also the top end power provided by the engine, very strong as well, can hold really nicely, sprinting the red light. Also the VQ V6 here is surprisingly refined. Again, they reengineered it for improved efficiency of course to make it smoother running. And it really shows.

VQ has always been a great engine, but perhaps not the smoothest running V6, this one – really quite creamy. Nissan is offering five different trim levels of the 2016 Maxima here, and I happen to be driving the SR, which is the sportiest of the bunch.

And it gets unique suspension tuning, special springs, unique anti-roll bars and other things as well. And they really help tighten this car up, make it quite a bit of fun for a front wheel drive car. Nissan did a very nice job with the interior of its 2016 Maxima. It is extremely premium in here.

Do you want to earn a few bragging rights? It's simple. Simply test your Nissan Maxima accelerations time, of course, in a hands-free as well as fully automated way. What's more, post the Maxima 0-60 time to your leaderboard.

The leaderboard will feature accuracy to the millisecond and display your position in comparison to other users in real time. Also, it'll save for you lots of acceleration times from various models.

Introduction

Being much sportier than the typical family sedan, the Maxima aren't like most other sedans you might be considering. The Maxima is equipped and priced more like a large sedan. This vehicle might even be an option for an entry-level luxury car. Despite the Maxima being mostly a niche offering, it is one with undeniable appeal.

0-60 and Engine specs

The luxury-car argument gets a little feeble when you check under the sheet metal. The naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 cranks up respectable horsepower, enough to propel our 3607-pound test car to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds; this might not be thrilling but steady with the standards of its competition. The Maxima packs 300 horsepower, this makes it a powertrain and that is the key factor keeping it out of the luxury ranks: the front-wheel drive as well as the Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) does not exceed rental-car norms.

Nissan is a leader in CVT development, its brand the Maxima has been implying that the once-reviled device is tending towards acceptability among folks who like to drive. The transmission delivers simulated upshifts when there is a weighty foot on the throttle, and also responds well to manual shifting. A stable foot on the accelerator is, however, required to get into the stepped shift logic. A moderate throttle input will still produce a strong hint of the classic slipping-clutch response, and this is a sense of transmission trying to keep pace with the engine.

The top Maxima give a surprisingly good account of itself on back roads. Its suspension tuning is well firm enough to keep it's concerning altitudes at a reasonable level, and also its responses to steering inputs are reasonably prompt with a buttoned-down chassis.

Exterior and Interior

Let's check out the major luxe features here and leave aside the badge-prestige factor. The seats are heated, ventilated, perforated, off-white, and of course leather—check. What is off-white? You ask. This is called Cashmere (the other choice being Charcoal) by the Nissan people. It dictates no chocolate ice cream cones be allowed inside, ever due to its light hue appearance.

This Nissan's woodgrain trim is hard to love, too, even though it is allegedly inspired by mahogany. It has had upgrades like instrumental panel appearance, door trim, and center console which come to be more standard with the platinum trim level. It also makes a case of selecting less pricy and marginally more driver-oriented SR model which we tested in mid-2015.

Verdict

The Maxima, just like many Nissan cars offer a concise list of factory-installed options. Apart from paint and interior trim colors, buyers will not have any way to customize their vehicles.

The 2017 Nissan Maxima has largely maintained its price: S, SV, SL, and SR models will cost you $50 more than the previous year's model; the Platinum model has increased in price by $30.

This car might not have the same status cred that goes with the favorite luxury brands, and the marketing pitch which implies it's a four-door sports car is similar to suggest that a Shetland pony is a good bet to win the Kentucky Derby, as we already observed in our test of the SR model. But if the Maxima is assessed for what it delivers, then its hedonism is undeniable. If labels and logos aren't crucial to you, then luxury can be stated as the quality which we experience via the eyes, the hands, the ears, and the seat of the pants. And the Maxima score maximum points on the premium scale by those indices.
